The names of the gods have become mantras, imbued with all the power of the gods they identify. Devotees of Krishna who chant Hare Rama Hare Krishna, “hail Rama, hail Krishna,” 56 ◆ Hinduism are reciting a mantra that is also a prayer. Yantras, also called mandalas, are widely used in meditation, are found in art, and are worked into the floorplans of temples. The special powers that are supposed to develop as a sideeffect of Tantric practice are part of a wider belief that religious attainment brings special abilities.
It is here in these legal texts that the philosophical ideals intersect with daily life. These texts define the proper dharmic life; they explain how to perform the correct duties for one’s caste and stage in life. So, for example, the texts describe the proper age for a child to be sent to a teacher and what subjects he should learn. The lore taught was supposed to be appropriate to the caste. A brahmin studied the Vedas and ritual practices. If the lad was a kshatriya, after a brief introduction to the Vedas, he was to learn weaponry and statecraft.
